Oxford United goalkeeper Simon Eastwood stepped in after Jamie Cumming was injured during the club’s opening League One away match at Steven Borough. Eastwood, 37, made his first competitive appearance for the club in two‑and‑a‑half years, helping the Yellows to a 2‑1 victory over Barnet in the opening match.
Eastwood’s return to the crease
Eastwood was brought on after Cumming was withdrawn with less than ten minutes played. The former Chelsea man had been replaced by the 37‑year‑old, who had last featured in a competitive fixture in February 2024, a 1‑1 draw against Reading. In the warm‑up for the match against MK Dons, Cumming felt a problem and warned Eastwood, but the first‑choice keeper stayed on to keep the momentum as the team pushed for an equaliser.
"Jamie's been struggling since last Saturday against MK," Eastwood told reporters. "He was going to come off in the last, probably, few minutes, but we were pushing for an equaliser, so he stayed on."
Eastwood admitted he had known all week that he would eventually come on. "I always knew that I was going to come on," he said, adding that the team had joked about him starting the game and him coming off the bench.
Cumming’s injury and its impact
Cumming’s injury was first noticed during the warm‑up against MK Dons, where he felt a problem and gave Eastwood a warning. Despite the warning, Cumming played the full match, but the injury forced him out early in the Steven Borough game.
"He was given a bit of a warning in the warm‑up," Eastwood explained. "He said he was going to try it, but I always knew I was going to come on."
The injury has highlighted the importance of depth in the goalkeeping department, especially after the departure of second‑string keeper Matt Ingram and the introduction of a temporary transfer embargo on the Yellows.
Eastwood’s role moving forward
Eastwood has been involved in pre‑season, keeping sharp and staying ready. He played a full 90 minutes in a 2‑1 win at Barnet before the season began. "I’ve been keeping sharp and staying ready," he said.
"I was the third choice last season, but this season I’ll be back involved a little more, which I’m excited about," Eastwood added. "I’ve been in Oxford for my 11th season, but I still have a bit of hunger to keep playing."
In addition to his playing duties, Eastwood signed a new player‑coach contract in the summer, giving him match‑day support responsibilities and a role in developing the next generation of shot‑stoppers, including 20‑year‑old Monty Marriott, the club’s third‑choice keeper.
The Yellows’ 2‑1 win over Barnet at Steven Borough gave them their first three points of the season, with goals from Gatlin O'Donkor and Cameron Brannagan. Eastwood’s performance was praised by travelling supporters, who celebrated his return to the squad.
