Luka Lynch scored his first professional goal but Oxford United had to show immense resilience to secure a 1-1 draw at Mansfield Town on Thursday night after finishing the game with nine men. The result extends the U's unbeaten run in League One to five matches, keeping them eighth in the table with 14 points from seven games.
Lynch, cutting in from the left edge of the penalty area, bent a superb shot into the top corner in the 34th minute to give his side the lead. Siriki Dembélé provided the assist for the breakthrough, which came against the run of play.
Kioso and O'Donkor see red
Oxford's task became far harder in the final quarter of the match. Peter Kioso received a second yellow card in the 75th minute, reducing the visitors to ten men. Just seven minutes later, substitute Gatlin O’Donkor was also dismissed for a second bookable offence, leaving Aaron Ramsey's side with nine. The situation became even more extreme in stoppage time when Brodie Spencer briefly left the pitch for treatment, momentarily leaving Oxford with eight.
Smith bundles in late leveller
Mansfield, who had dominated possession and registered 24 shots, finally found a way through in the 82nd minute. A cross into the box caused confusion and Michael Smith managed to bundle the ball over the line after a defensive lapse, cancelling out Lynch's opener.
Despite the numerical disadvantage and testing conditions, every Oxford player defended resolutely to earn a valuable point on the road. The performance was described as one full of determination and resilience by the travelling supporters who made the long journey on a weeknight.
Luka Lynch said the moment was "a moment of real quality that gave United a crucial advantage." The young forward was substituted shortly after the hour mark, with his side still leading.
The point solidifies Oxford's position in the top half of the standings, just five points off the automatic promotion places. Mark Harris, the club's top scorer this season with four goals, was replaced late on as Ramsey looked to shore up his depleted side.
Oxford United now prepare to host Wigan Athletic at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday, 20 October, looking to continue their positive form.
