Oxford United's unbeaten run came to an end with a 1-0 FA Cup first round defeat away to Stevenage on Saturday. Carl Piergianni's header after just four minutes was enough to settle the tie, sending the League One side out of the competition. This result on 7 November followed a recent league run of two wins and two draws from their last five games.

Stevenage took the lead from their first meaningful attack. Ben Broggio delivered a deep cross from the right and Piergianni, rising highest at the far post, powered a header past Eastwood. "4' Carl Piergianni (Stevenage, assist Ben Broggio)," the goalscorer said, confirming the decisive moment.

Oxford, who had won 2-1 at the same ground in August, dominated possession with 61% but struggled to create clear chances. Their eight shots yielded only two on target, while Stevenage were more clinical, forcing Eastwood into three saves from their 13 attempts. Gatlin O'Donkor, who scored in the midweek 2-0 win over Reading on 4 November, was largely contained by the home defence.

Head coach Aaron Ramsey made three second-half changes in search of an equaliser, introducing Aidomo Emakhu and Ruben Roosken on 63 minutes and Jack Lee with 13 minutes remaining. The visitors applied late pressure, winning nine corners to Stevenage's seven, but could not find a way through a resolute back line.

The result halts a positive sequence for Oxford, who sit third in League One with 26 points from 13 games, having recorded seven wins, five draws and one loss. Their recent form of two wins, two draws and one loss had kept them within three points of leaders Huddersfield. Top scorer M. Harris, with six goals this season, was unable to add to his tally. The team's overall record shows 22 goals scored and 11 conceded, giving them a goal difference of plus 11.

Oxford will now turn their focus back to the league, where their next fixture is away at Peterborough on Saturday 14 November. They will aim to bounce back quickly and maintain their promotion push from a strong position in the standings. This cup exit follows a busy period of league fixtures, including a 1-1 draw at Barnsley on 31 October, a 1-0 win over Stockport County on 27 October, a goalless draw with Bradford on 24 October, and a 2-1 victory against Wigan on 20 October.
