Two goals in the last four minutes turned a single-goal lead into a rout as Oxford United beat Burton Albion three-nil at home on Saturday, 12 September. Siriki Dembele had put the hosts ahead in the seventy-sixth minute before Louie Sibley and Gatlin O Donkor added late gloss.
Dembele breaks the deadlock
The game stayed goalless for long spells, with Oxford United dominant on the ball but short of a breakthrough. Dembele finally found it in the seventy-sixth minute, finishing to give his side the lead they had threatened for most of the afternoon. Oxford United finished the match with sixty-five per cent possession and eleven shots, five of them on target, against Burton's nine attempts and two on target, figures fans can check in full on our stats page.
Sibley and O'Donkor add late gloss
Having already teed up the opener, Dembele turned provider again in the ninetieth minute, setting up Louie Sibley to make it two. Gatlin O Donkor, on as a substitute for Jamie McDonnell, completed the scoring deep into stoppage time, finishing off a move started by fellow replacement Tyler Goodrham in the ninetieth-plus-fourth minute. Burton had rung the changes themselves, sending on Kain Adom and Sulyman Krubally after the break, but could not find a way back into the game. Jamie McDonnell and Burton's Joe Cameron Lewis were both booked for fouls, one apiece, in what was otherwise a scrappy but one-sided contest, with Oxford United conceding fourteen fouls to Burton's sixteen.
Table and what comes next
The win was Oxford United's second in a row and leaves them eleventh in League One on seven points from four games, with a record of two wins, one draw and one defeat this season. That form, which fans can trace game by game on our standings page, has followed a run that included a four-nil win at Leicester on 5 September and a heavier defeat at Huddersfield before that. Manager Gary Waddock's side are now nine goals scored and six conceded for the campaign, a goal difference of plus three, and sit five points off leaders Sheffield Wednesday.
Oxford United's starting eleven against Burton included goalkeeper S. Eastwood, with Brannagan and Missanga again central to the buildup play before their withdrawal, and the full lineup details are available on our squad page. Attention now turns to Cambridge United, who visit the Kassam Stadium on Saturday, 19 September sitting seventh in the table, a fixture Oxford United fans can add to their calendar via our fixtures page.
