Oxford United's former midfielder Joshua Johnson has made a move back to Maidenhead United, a club in the National League South. Johnson, who graduated from Oxford United's academy in 2021, was once hailed by then-manager Karl Robinson as a "terrific prospect." He made his first-team debut at just 16 years old, featuring in a 2-0 EFL Cup loss to Premier League side Crystal Palace in 2022. During his time with the U's, he made a total of seven appearances. After his contract expired last month, Johnson is now returning to Maidenhead United, where he previously played 22 matches.

The young midfielder's departure from Oxford United was part of a larger exodus, with ten players leaving the club. Johnson expressed his excitement about rejoining Maidenhead, stating that his previous experience at the club allowed him to showcase his abilities. He emphasized the importance of getting playing time and reconnecting with former teammates as key reasons for his return.

Maidenhead United had a competitive season last year, finishing seventh in the National League South and reaching the play-offs, where they were eliminated by Dorking Wanderers. Johnson's return is expected to bolster their squad as they aim for another strong campaign. The club has welcomed him back with enthusiasm, highlighting his potential to contribute significantly in the upcoming season. Johnson's journey reflects the challenges and opportunities young players face in their careers, and his return to Maidenhead United marks a new chapter in his development as a footballer.
