Oxford United fans out in North America for the 2026 World Cup have blasted FIFA's ticket prices for England games as 'wrong' as safety concerns are raised. Football's governing body has received an avalanche of criticism in the build-up to the tournament due to the pricing of tickets and the behaviour of host nation, the United States of America, in regards to the entry of foreign teams, supporters and officials. The tournament kicks off today with joint-hosts Mexico up against South Africa in Group A. There are currently Oxford fans out in the US representing the club as England followers, with the Three Lions set to kick off their campaign on Wednesday night against Ghana. One U's season ticket holder is currently across the pond with his family with a view to getting to England's opening fixture. '[Tickets are] freely available, but for four people they're coming to about £2500,' the Yellows supporter said. 'For a football match which doesn't involve Oxford United, it's a little bit much.' As much as we staunch football followers and we love the World Cup, and hopefully England do really well, there is a price limit to that and I think FIFA has got the pricing pretty wrong this World Cup. Anyway, going out and representing Oxford...I know other Oxford fans that will be there and we're hoping to meet up in a bar which will be it's very similar to most Oxford away days or home days. I'm sure there'll be many recognisable faces out there during the kind of journey. We decided to get married in Boston because...in the UK and the rigmarole which comes with it is hugely expensive these days and we thought we can get to go on to an amazing tour of the States while the World Cup's on and that was a unique experience. He added: 'But it is easier to get married in Boston than it is to get England tickets.' We'll be meeting up with a couple of Oxford fans while we're out there...we're really excited for the World Cup to take place. I just hope the kind of commercialisation by FIFA and the weirdness about some of the shenanigans with the Donald Trump administration don't put a down on the tournament. With the threat of immigration enforcement agency ICE looming in the USA and problems arising at the border - a top African referee from Somalia, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, was denied entry to the country last week - there are worries over fan safety. 'Obviously things that are making you feel a bit nervous at the moment are stuff like the weird kind of veil of ICE plucking people away,' one U's fan in the States said. 'It makes you feel uneasy. Are you going to get through the border? Is something going to happen if anybody's misbehaving? It just feels very much like a very weird fear but we'll wait to see what that experience is like.
